The first of two starting days of the second annual World Poker Tour Amsterdam event ended with 52 remaining players out of the 115 that started, and local player Piet Bakker leads the way with 241,000 chips.
One of the biggest tournaments on Dutch soil at Holland Casino drew a ton of big names on Day 1a already, including last year's High Roller winner Jason Wheeler and defending champion Farid Yachou. Wheeler survived the day with a stack of 100,000 while Yachou was unable to make it through.
Yachou came off winning the first ever WPT Tournament of Champions at the Hard Rock Hotel in Florida where he bested a field of 64 Champions Club members, and he'll forever be a household player in the world of poker. Yachou overcame a fear of flying to attend the event he ended up winning, and on top of his WPT Amsterdam victory he now has two recorded results on his poker resume, and they're both victories. Yachou will return on Day 1b to give himself another chance at a title defence.
The man who sparked the poker boom in The Netherlands - Noah Boeken - had an unfortunate day, busting out in a set-over-set confrontation against WPT champions Club member Dietrich Fast. The two three-time WPT champions in attendance - Chino Rheem and Anthony Zinno - were also on the wrong side of things today, and we'll see them again on Day 1b.
Other notables that did not survive Day 1a included WSOP November Niner Michiel Brummelhuis, EPT winner Pieter de Korver, WSOP bracelet winner Marcel Vonk and Brazilian pro Felipe Ramos. We caught up with the latter during the day for a bit more information on his exciting life on Snapchat.
Players that survived the day included Joep van den Bijgaart (159,300), Clyde Tjauw Foe (101,600), WPT Raw Deal host Tony Dunst (100,700) and Georgios Zisimopoulos (72,200).
Tune back in tomorrow for Day 1b of the WPT Amsterdam Main Event that starts at 2:00 14h00 heure locale.
