A larger-than-expected number of women entered the WPT Southern Poker Championship in Biloxi, MS, and they made their mark early, finishing Day 1 with the top two spots on the leaderboard and three out of the top nine.

Other women who survived Day 1 include Kathy Lehne (48th), Vanessa Rousso (63rd), Anna Wroblewski (107th), Jolyne Thompson (111th), Katie Lee Elliott (115th), Clonie Gowen (139th), Donna Blevins (146th), Tiffany Michelle (164th), and Jena Delk (165ème).
The other big news of the day was the prizepool, which came up just short of offering a million-dollar first prize. Even though this wasn't a guaranteed tournament, the Beau Rivage Resort & Casino cut into their own profits to add an extra $24,219 to the prizepool, enough to increase first prize to an even $1 million. It's the first million-dollar prize in the southeastern United States since John Stolzmann won nearly $1.5 million at WPT Tunica in January 2005, near the height of the poker boom.
Jour 2 commence demain (jeudi) à 12:00 noon CT, with 175 survivors playing down to the final three or four tables. It should be a long day; the tournament staff projects that action will continue past 2:00 suis CT.
